In conversation with FT editor Roula Khalaf at the FTWeekend festival in Washington DC,
Edward Luce, US national editor, discusses the parallel lives of the 20th century’s two best known national security advisers to US presidents. Luce, the author of a new biography of Zbigniew Brzezinski, compares and contrasts the career of the emigre Pole who advised Democrat Jimmy Carter, with that of Henry Kissinger, the Jewish-German refugee who served two Republican presidents. While both brought the perspective of outsiders to foreign policy traditionally dominated by Anglo-Saxon “wasps”, their impact differed in meaningful ways, for instance on their approach to Moscow. Crucially, they both served presidents who could be disagreed with, in contrast to 47th president Donald Trump.
